THESIS.  PROMOTING A HEALTHY AND LIVABLE COMMUNITY THROUGH NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS: A LANDSCAPE REDEVELOPMENT STUDY IN FLORENCE

The continuous urban expansion and rapid pace of urbanization present significant challenges but also bring opportunities for modern urban planning. The research area is along the Arno River, includes a complex structure partially overlapping with industrial zones, surrounded by railways, highways, and an airport. The project addresses issues such as public health, green space planning, air pollution, noise pollution, and the neglect of certain areas in the landscape.

LABORATORY 4. LAND AND LANDSCAPE PLANNING

Economic and social changes are continuously shaping our landscapes. Over the past three centuries, vast amounts of coal have been burned to generate energy, with oil and natural gas being used for the same purpose since the early 19th century. Human society has been in constant transformation, and although solar and wind energy have been utilized for about a decade, emissions and waste have multiplied over the past three centuries. The growing energy demand and the goal of achieving environmental sustainability have driven nations to electrify their systems, which is reflected in the landscape. Ecological transition is one of the long-term challenges we face today.

LABORATORY 3. URBAN LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT

City of Prato faces challenges related to economic restructuring, social integration, and environmental sustainability. The municipal government is implementing an urban renewal strategy aimed at revitalizing communities through "participatory" and "sustainable" actions. This includes developing high-density green areas, known as "urban jungles," and integrating them into the urban landscape. These interventions, such as creating corridors, green infrastructure, and extensive urban green space measures. The strategy also aims to combine social needs with the demand for activity spaces, thereby improving public health and overall well-being.

The Boboli Gardens, designed and built by the Medici family in the 16th century and located in Florence. The restoration and preservation of the Boboli Gardens are crucial not just for maintaining their historical value but also for continuing their cultural and educational functions in modern society. One of the key principles of garden restoration is maintaining historical accuracy, which implies a thorough historical research.

LABORATORY 1. DESIGNING GARDENS, PARKS AND OPEN SPACE

The research area includes the associated spaces of the Lumen/Mensola Urban Laboratory, a municipally-owned region that has been abandoned for a long time but retains the characteristics, textures, and markers of its historically productive agricultural use and more recent functions. This area aims to reconnect citizens with urban spaces, serving as a shared public space for those who wish to see their city thrive socially once again.
